The governor of Tasmania Kate Warner was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the Government House announced.
In a statement, the Government House said it was the most common form of lymphoma and is treatable.
The Governor will need a series of chemotherapy cycles for several months.
The statement states that it is otherwise fit and healthy and should maintain its duties during treatment.
