Steve Smith will undergo an elbow surgery Tuesday, almost certainly ruining the hopes of the superstar suspending an international comeback in March.
Smith, ready to stay in the saddle for six weeks after the operation, is on track to be completely shortly before Australia starts its World Cup defense on June 1.
The dismissed Australian captain, who is currently serving a 12-month ban on his role in the barbaric scandal in Cape Town, is optimistic and will be cleaned up to return to the early stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) .
But the prospect that Smith would return for Australia during an ODI series against Pakistan at the end of March, which had been aired by the national trainer Justin Langer and the CEO of Cricket Australia (CA) Kevin Roberts, is
Australia has to send his team of 15 men of the World Cup by April 23, although they may continue without approval until May 23rd.
It means that Smith's best guess is that he will have a month of IPL cricket to convince the breeders that he is ready to be part of the World Cup defense in Australia.
Langer and Smith spoke Saturday, when CA medicos made a quick decision but far from simple after examining the scans of the ligament injury that forced the 29-year-old to cut short his stint in the Twenty20 League of Bangladesh .
It is believed that the operation is a piecing, as opposed to a reconstruction
This one would have acted a much longer period on the sidelines and potentially more serious consequences for Smith's World Cup hopes.
Medicos and Smith, who will now miss the Pakistani Super League, have assessed whether it was wiser for the batsman to rest or go under the knife.
It is the best option, with the expectation that it will reduce the risk of further flare-ups in England over the course of this year plus the rest of Smith's career.
Langer and Roberts tracked the reintegration of Smith and David Warner with help from senior players, team management and members of the CA executive.
Langer, skipper Test Tim Paine and captain ODI Aaron Finch have all over the past few weeks Smith and Warner will be welcomed with open arms .
Warner remains in the mix to return, probably the day his call ends, during the five-match match against Pakistan.
A mishap in the field is the fault of Smith's line-up.
"The return to playing time will be clearer once the pair is removed," a CA spokesman said.
Smith, who commanded the Victorian Comillas in Bangladesh, scored 16 points and zero in t The T20 tournament.
