The Dental Health Week, which takes place in the first full week of August, is the main annual oral health promotion event of the Australian Dental Association. Its purpose is to educate Australians on the importance of maintaining good oral health by promoting the following key health messages:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between the teeth at least once a day with dental floss or an interdental brush
- Eat a balanced diet and limit the intake of sugars
- Visit the dentist regularly for checks and preventive treatments.
The theme of this year's Dental Health Week, which runs from 6 to 12 August, is Watch your mouth. Alluring is to think that everyone is looking at their mouth and practicing good oral health, the reality is that many Australians are not completely listening to these messages. This is why transmitting the message about good oral health is more important than ever.
Since the best oral education takes place face to face, from the dentist to the patient, ADA encourages dentists to use the Dental Health Week website, associated resources and also the Oral Health Tracker to ADA to help conversations with their patients and the wider community to look at their mouth and make their oral health a high priority.
