A B-double truck carrying spray cans exploded on fire on the Hume Highway at Yass, north of Canberra, backing down while firefighters attempted to stop further explosions.
The fire was reported just before 6:00 pm near the Yass ring road on the highway, which connects Sydney and Melbourne.
Police said the agents were on site to handle the traffic and said the truck was carrying aerosol cans.

Witness Herman van de Brug said "occasionally" there was a new explosion inside the truck, pushing more black smoke into the air .
"There are a number of explosions with large plumes of smoke and fire, but nobody passes," he said.
A spokesman for NSW Fire and Rescue said the fire had spread in the grass nearby, and that the firefighters were working with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to contain forest fires.
He said that the double truck B carried a mixed load of aerosol cans.
The RFS said that no injuries were reported, and that motorists should avoid the area and allow additional travel time.
